Never Knowing when to shut up!
For the second time since Friday I’ve seen Channel 6 mentioned so I did a bit more research on it. First of all I head that they had received extra VC funding from ACT. Then TCAL mentioned a little more on it.
They have a Wikipedia page which details what platforms they’ll be on. It looks like they’ll be on all the Cable and Satellite networks which is great since most Irish people have one or the other. Unfortunately Channel 6’s website sucks so I can’t find any information from that!
It’d be great if Channel 6 decided to broadcast free-to-air on Satellite then British (and Irish abroad) viewers would be able to watch.
Oh I presume they’ve got for the number 6 to avoid having confusion with British Channel 5 (who are now called just five?). Channel 5 isn’t available in Ireland currently but I can imagine the confusion if it did become available here if there was a Channel 5 in Ireland too! Incidentally it actually is the 6th Irish channel with Setanta being the `5th’ channel.
Channel 5 is just ‘five’ now, but everyone calls it Channel 5 still.
As a matter of interest, what British channels do you get in Ireland? Do you get the BBC channels, or ITV and that kind of thing?
On Sky Digital we get all the BBC’s and ITV’s but only BBC 1 and 2 are on the EPG. If you have Cable - Chorus or NTL - you’ll get BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV, and Channel 4.
Then if we’re talking about non-terrestrial British stations, we get them all! It’s great because sometimes (quite often actually) one of the Irish channels will have a show (Lost, Desperate Housewives) long before the British channel picks it up.
So we probably have more choice than you do.
I read something over the weekend about it and apparently it launches in the Spring.
Hopefully it will be a bit better than the corny infomercial that is City Channel.
city channel only has a €1m budget each year and is absolutley muck. you’d have more fun watching a shopping channel at least they can afford lighting, this channel 6 seems to have a budget of over €15 million which would make you think it would be a lot better though i bet it just shows programmes that they buy from other countries, it’d be good to have an irish channel with irish programmes that aren’t crap but i wouldn’t get me hopes up
Channel 6 has done a major deal with CBS Paramount. They will be showing mainly repeats of programmes like Frasier Sex and the City, Star Trek the Next Generation and others from the Paramount stable. There will be no news programmes. This channel is mainly aimed at a younger audience. Among the current network shows in America they have picked up Numbers. The channel is due to start up on March 30th. In response Tv3 are doing a total revamp. Watch out for new logos and promos. If you want Irish programmes you’re not going to get them on this channel. RTE is your only hope but as we all know they only hire neandrathals.
i work for RTE and i have some info on channel 6 but from what i hear its crap so i will not bother telling you. chris
Stunning bit of info there Chris. stop the press! Seriously I’d love to know what info RTE has on Channel 6 - maybe the same as everyone else?
Mike, I heard the same regarding their programming and wasnt impressed at their initial lack of commitment to Irish related/produced shows, but as a digital non-terestrial station they arent obliged to commit a certain percentage of their output to these issues as RTE, TG4 and TV3 are being under the thumb of the licence fee regulations.
However, this aside its disappointing to see a station churning out more overlapping imported american tv. Is this not becoming a case of two many sharks in a small pond? I’m quite disappointed at the BCI’s decision to approve another channel that follows the same predictable output as those that came before it.
Competition is a good thing but it seems RTE, TV3 and now SIX are all content to vie for the same audience with the same shows. Cheap and all that city channel is, it is a channel that tries to provide information relative to its Dublin audience albeit with a miniscule budget that should hopefully increase when it expands into providing information for other Irish cities.
Lets hope Six has more to offer.
Viewers on the east coast and close to the border get five, Dave…. we here in the South East point our UHF aerials eastward and get all the Brit channels, or rather Welsh versions of same. Apart from five, which is the same all over Britland.
Channel 4 sucks though, All-Welsh, most of the day!
You can actually pick up five along the east coast, once you’re outside of Dublin.
I often find better things to watch on five, when I only have it and the 4 established Irish channels when I’ve disappeared down the country for a short break
Latest news on channel 6-you’ll read it here first!. Channel 6 have signed a major deal with NBC UNIVERSAL. Look out for major movies from this stable-also series House, Law and Order and Law and Order Criminal Intent and the American version of the Office which is supposed to be very good. What this means is the competition for American series among Irish stations is going to be fierce and will probably mean we are going to get them a lot quicker than before. Also Tg4 budget has been upped considerably for American acquisitions in the light of channel 6 arrival. This is going to be an all out war!
Does anyone think that some time in the future Channel 5 would be aired on Sky digital because let’s face it, Sky owns the market and Channel 5 would get much higher ratings. And whats the disagreement over anyway? is it because they want to be channel no. 106 (just after the Irish channels) which is currently Sky one’s slot?
Just wondering if anyone knows if they’re recruiting staff yet??? I’m finishing up in college in June and I’m looking around for media related jobs…
It’s called channel 6 because UTV - from Northern Ireland/Ulster consider themselves the 5th channel in the Republic.
You sure it’s not just called Channel 6 because there are already 5 Irish Stations, the 5th being Setanta.
don’t see the point in channel 6 ,most people in ireland have sky ,it looks like all they’ll be showing is repeats the market is full already, what with the likes of e4 ,more4,parmount comedy 1and 2,itv1,2,3,4 and bbc1,2,3,4 whats the point there wasting there time and money, theres too many channels in ireland for the size of the market as it is.
I don’t think ‘most people have Sky’ and besides if that’s the attitude you’ll have then we might aswell get rid of everything except RTE 1 since that’s the only one that does any significant amount of Irish programming.
Obviously there is a market for it or they would’nt be going to all that expense to set the thing up. Why do so many West Brits think there is’nt a point in having any more Irish channels-just let the Brits do it and then we do’nt have to bother doing anything. Why have a country at all. At least if somebody sets up a business in Ireland somebodys going to get work. Interesting to know the beaten down colonised ‘the Irish a fuck all good at anything brigade’ are still out there.
hi chris here again i hear channel 6 are going to show a lot of porn,i think that will interest the likes of paul.
i really hope you dont make any critical decisions in RTE, Chris, going about insulting the intelligence of licence fee payers and presuming you know what demographic they belong to based on little or no research…. oh hang on, by that estimation that would make you a commissioning editor?
all joking aside, as more info comes out its quite an interesting venture for channel 6 to start up with no broadcast studio facilities. It makes for a more interesting approach to getting a cohesive identity for the irish start up shows in fashion and music plus it means that we could have a faster turnover of programming during the year with the possibility of 6 commissioning more short run series until they can see if any strike a chord with the public.
I’m waiting to see what tv3 will bombard us with in the first week of channel 6.
@ trekkypj
They have just hired staff recently. Worth sending in your cv I’d say - sent it to Intermission Studios, as they are handling all of the channel’s production.
its being put onwhere mtv is and mtv is moving
I was just flicking thru the Chorus channels and noticed that Channel 6 has taken up channel number 106. Strange really as all the other channels are only 2 digits, with rte 1, rte2, tv3, and tg4 being channel numbers 01 to 04 respectively. anyone know if maybe chorus are goiing to rearrange their channel positioning?
anyone here know what date sky ireland airs channel 6 cheers all
No date as of yet, as far as I know. Channel 6 had requested channel number 106 on Sky Digital as it follows the rest of the Irish channels, but Sky refused as it’s the location of Sky One. So for the moment there is no Sky date as Channel 6 were not happy with the channel number Sky was offering them
Chorus analogue is aring Channel 6 now
Mike
I’ve seen the American version of the office. It’s terrible.
It’s like listening to boyband doing a cover version of your favourite song.
Does anyone know can it be picked up by Rabbit’s ears/indoor aerial?
Cant seem to tune this in, on chorus wicklow anyone have any ideas. Heard there’s loads of porn too. it’s gona be great.
- It cannot be picked up by rabbit ears
- There will be no porn
- Ch6 told Sky to go take a run and jump as Sky wanted to put them at the bottom of the entertainment list. Basicly, Sky Ireland know that Ch6 will give them a run for their advertising money. It will eventually go on to Sky but no date is set. If Ch6 are serious about playing they will have to get onto the Sky platform which reaches well over a third of all homes in Ireland. So, one in three of us will not get the channel on launch.
- The station was called Channel 6 because of the existence of Five in the UK. It would have confused people.
Does anyone know if Channel 6 plan to broadcast on free-to-air satellite in Ireland/ASTRA 2 satellite? For all us non-NTL/Chorus subscribers!
does any one know wen channel 6 are likly to broadcast on sky? and will they ever go to aerial?
Actually channel 4 and five are available in Ireland!
If you have a sky box then order a sky ftv card from ebay (about £40), then activate it in your sky reciever (by pulling out the power lead for a couple of minutes, turning back on the reciever with your finger pressed onto the backup button, then let the card update and leave it in the reciever overnight, you will also get bbc3/bbc4/itv1/2/3/4 in the all channels menu, this card will be guaranteed until 2008!
the better option is however to get a motorised dish (1metre), and a technomate 1500ci super, satellite reciever. you can patch this via a laptop, you can get hundreds of channels, dozens of movie channels, live premiership matches (much more than sky, including saturday 3pm), you also have options to subscribe to what you want, such as the digitalb package which has prem football, explorer channels, movies, kids etc for about £ 130 per annum- much better value than sky!!!
good sites for finding out more are www.alsat.co.uk, www.gccadm.net
Take my advice, spend your average annual sky subscription on a motorised system, get better tv than sky, and never have to pay another tv bill !!
Channel 6 will never go free to air by aerial. All analogue signals (ie aerial and standard cable) across europe will be shut down by 2010. An EU Directive states that all broadcasts should be digital by 2010… whether the governments of Europe make the deadline or not is another matter.
Channel 6 on Sky?? It all depends who buckles first Sky or Channel 6. I was at the launch in Custom House Quay last night and asked a few of the people from Ch6 when they would get onto Sky and they were unable to give a date.
Do anybody know the frequency that Channel 6 is broadcast on digital satelitte in Ireland. I am already picking up Ch 5 from the UK via a card.
Can I tune in my existing box to receive Ch. 6
Gerry, Channel 6 is not available on digital satelite-only on cable from ntl or chorus.Having said that I have Chorus analogue service in Cork and the channel did not appear last night.Apparently it was to take the channel occupied by MTV. Did anyone else have a similar experience?
Spent a little time researching as much as i could on this channel six and have to say that the people on this site have more or less nailed the likely outcome for the channel. The line up is of rehashed but quality programs and new american shows that already exist on other british networks even at present. All of CSI are on RTE (as is NYPD Blue and the Law and Orders are they taking over the show now or just starting from year one again), Las Vegas moves channel (while already being on Sky one), Numbers resideds on ITV, My name is earl on C4 and the list goes on. They have no real advantage over public (irish fee payers) channels other than having no homebrew but i can see them holding on fo quite a time if not longer. They have gome after other shows of interest like House and such but they will have to really find some real gems to hit the mark. Examples of failure exist already by taking shows that were either closed down or canceled. The Closer for instance is very weak and they may even go after the incomplete Night Stalker (Bravo did). I can even see them going after some very week comedy maybe like Four kings (with seth green) or even the new comedy Teacher (American version nothing to do with british version) to fill up the line up. I would also not be surpried to see the likes of Bones popping in there also.
I’ll give the station some time to build up and id like to see where they go. TV3 has revamp the look but they have gotten tiresome to watch over the past year or two. I wish tem luck and hope they do well. Why not? It is good to see the irsh getting more channels we deserve them.
I have sky dig but Im gona cry if i cant get channel 6. I love reruns of American sitcoms!I was able to get utv by putting a code into sky so does anybody know a code i can put in to get chan 6?yours faithfully,tv addict x

Channel 6 are in continuing negotiations with Sky about getting onto Digital Satellite, so we should see them on SkyDigital soon enough. Channel 6 wanted the 105 slot in ROI. Sky wanted to give them a number in the 200’s.
Thanks Dean
My word. It must be without doubt the worst line up for a TV station I have ever seen. Why did they even bother?? Why do they associate the channel with Ireland??! What a joke. Nothing but imported trash. So bad it makes TV3 look good! I was looking through the line up on their pretty average looking website…. then I saw…The Office.. I thought ‘God they have one program anyway’… Then alas it turns out to be the American version.. Suprise suprise. Why couldn’t they even re run some Irish programs or some British comedy (professionaly written and class) instead of the best of SkyOne/TV3 (both crap Channels). Fair play to them though, they have overtaken TV3 as being the worst Channel ever to bother airing in Ireland. Thank God for RTE and TG4.
You’re obviously of the school that thinks everything American is crap and everything British is great. They called themselves Great Britain to appeal to people like you. Channel 6 shows CSI Miami which whether you like it or not is currently the most successful tv show in the world. Frasier, House and others are huge hits worldwide even in your beloved Great Britain. It’s a great thing that there is such a thing as choice otherwise people like you would force us to watch Fair City and Ros na Run (those flagship ‘drama’ shows from Rte and Tg4 (or is it ceathar-I’ll have to check my rosary)-currently exported to Ballymun and Donegal.
I have to agree with Mike.
Also I wonder how much of the American Office you’ve watched. Most people I know who’ve never watched automatically assume it’s rubbish but anyone who’s watched it seems to think it’s quite good and has a character of it’s own different to the UK version.
CC: Mike. I don’t recall promoting Fair City or Ros Na Run in the first place. I think our National channels have a lot more on offer anyway than soaps. Another thing I detest is people who could tell you everything about ‘Friends’ or ‘Family Guy’ and yet couldn’t tell you what is happening in this country. I agree that Fraiser is a brilliant show and is well written. I’ve never seen CSI so can’t comment. I’m certainly not a couch potato and
anything I want to see is always on one of our 3 channels which mostly is documentaries and live sport. Not that everything on RTE is brilliant either. I think Podge and Rodge is sad. Anyone could make up stories or jokes using cheap sexual remarks. Had Sky in the house which I subsequently got rid of. I saw I-Keano recently and that was worth more than a months subscription to Sky. I am a very independent person and not a crowd follower. I don’t have an I-Pod because everyone else has one. I have an I-River because they are good!. if in McDonalds (have to be very drunk), I will ask for a chip and a chicken burger and not a Fries and McChicken Sandwich ™! etc etc. I don’t dress head to toe in brandnames. Ye probably thinking I’m just an oul sod giving out about everything… Well I’m 28, senior engineer, love sport, playing music, socializing and havin a great crack. I love getting into social debates. I love being Irish!
Lets put some thing to bed about this socalled irish channel firstly they do not broadcast across the hole country as they are only a cable channel .
they are only maenly avalabul in city’s and town’s that have ntl or coras. they have no plans (which they told me when i phoned them) to go on digital the real one not the one you get with a cable.
so as far as i am conserend it is a cable channel and not a n. channel
please forgive the spelling .
all spelling aside Colum you havent really said anything new than what has already been said by others before you. Of course 6 are going to tell you they have no plans to go on SKY digital because thats their PR swinging into action so as to save face for not being on the highest watched cable network not to mention being denied some uk audience figures. They would be mad to ignore viewership figures. Its clear there is something to be said for that rumoured spat over positioning on the sky channel numbers or maybe its just the expense of running it on sky. time will tell.
i presume its SKY that you are referring to as ‘real digital’, but you can get real cable with a cable or dish? you should probably do some research into digital formats. The states is a good deal ahead on cable technology with some places able to deliver phone, tv, downloadable movies and broadband all on one line. even sky are looking to develop that system so it seems to be a more enviable direction to take cable delivery especially if you want to tie up the home user in more than just tv bills.
I have some inside knowledge of channel 6 and the management don’t know anything about technical issues etc and the first few weeks of the channel was not quality controlled. They do not deserve to succeed as they are misleading the public putting out programs in the wrong ratio and music videos which are not viewed before airing. Absolute joke of a company!!
smithy,
i cant see how putting out programs in the wrong ratio is misleading the public its more a case of misunderstanding broadcast formats on their part. RTE made a shanks mare of their title safe with their logo and credits (including subtitles) on some programmes being cropped at the edge of the screen.
I agree, Channel 6’s quality control has been appaling especially when it comes to the digital signal freezing and noise appearing on the image during films! of all programmes to do that nothing more infuriating then being in the middle of a film then bumph! the signals gone. Harking back to the old analog days of weather interfering with the signal.
The music videos not being viewed before airing is that a censorship issue you have a problem with or is it musical taste? If its true could be a gem of an opportunity to get more Irish bands on air. Quality aside its nice to have some music on tv at that hour again what with even MTV lacking music videos at that hour.
They would really want to get the technical issues sorted. I know of cheaper produced channels that didnt suffer from that.
The focus of the channel so far as been very poor and the station itself falls flat on its arse on a number of issues. I have seen as smithy pointed out the appaling lack of knowledge regarding ratios and i haven’t though noticed any real censorship issue but then i havbbe’t over watched the channel. I will give C6 some back up though…. RTE had the same problems at the start of the ratio changeover and while the technology is older now and standard they should have it sorted by now.
My problems so far have to do with its braodcasting times…. kicking off with a music show and ending on music show both 2 hours in duration leaves for about 6-7 hours if not less of TV shows/movies per night. My inital hope of longevity for the station is under some serious stress as the station looks like it isn’t going to offer anything new and be happy to be a mix of TG4/TV3/SKYONE. (TG4-music/TV3-movies(odd show)/SKYONE-Star trek/Buffy)…. i feel tired watching this channel and almost feel like i’m cheating on my old reliables…. Biography, SKYONE (except for this SKYNEWS Ireland malarky on it at them moment…. why am i paying for two channels to show the same news… if i want to watch the news i’ll change over to F**KING SKY NEWS), UKTV Gold, Living, RTE2.
Too many are beating up on this fledgling Channel and it’s hardly out of the starting blocks. Well the viewers vote with their remote and the viewers have said the following to date…. (Note that the Channel is only available in 600,000 homes out of 1.3m approximately). All figures are from the first full week. Remember also the target market is 15-34 year olds.
1) Girl’s Night - Wednesday - achieved a peak rating of 3.9 of 15-34 yr old women. Much of that attributable to S&TC. In 1998 when TV3 aired this programme it rated less which shows that repeats are wanted by some viewers. Thelma & Louise pulled in a share of 7% for women aged 15-34.
2) The channel scored a share of viewing for the entire Wednesday night (8pm to 11pm) of 8% for women 15-34 which was only beaten by RTE1 !!!
3) Lad’s Night - Tuesday - achieved a 5.5% share for men aged 15-34.
4) Crime Night - Monday - is getting a hammering due to the runaway success of comedy programmes, LOST and Podge & Rodge on this night but you cannot win them all.
5) Channel 6 aimes to achieve a share of 3% of all TV viewing by 15-34s by the end of its first year. Considering it is only available in 600,000 homes it is doing quite well with a share of 1.1% in its first week. To put that in perspective it’s more than MTV, Nickelodeon, Sky Sports 2, Setanta and on a par with Paramount. (I know Nick is a kids channel before anyone has a go at me for that)
Now taking off my advertising hat (I work in a media agency) I’d like to say that catching the first ever episode of Frasier was an absolute joy - laugh out loud. And you gotta give it to House with Hugh Laurie; Family guy and the music shows are pretty good… anyone seen that video with the rapping rabbi …who the hell was it again, anyone? As for the movie show presented by some average to pretty (for a TV presenter) young thing, there is at least “criticism” unlike the cock ‘n’ bull, everything is “brilliant” you get from TV3’s popcorn. Remember too that the presenters are all new to TV and they’re Irish. Let’s just hope they don’t turn into arrogant little face-I-wanna-slap type’s like Ms Morahan of RTE. That one makes me wanna kick my TV in.
So, for a start up channel with some of the worst ever advertising to hit Ireland’s billboards I think the station is off to a good start …all technical problems out of the way. And so what if they don’t screen videos… if they know the song is good then it should’nt matter what the video is like.
Remember there are no bloody soaps on this channel which is a relief to all viewers who spend there viewing between 7 and 9pm trying to avoid them. Yes, its a small channel and no its not perfect but you gotta stop with the moaning and start looking at the benefits the channel has offered.
Hi there Lockie - when speaking with the people in Ch6 sopme time ago they did say the scheduled time of 3pm to 3am is the initial offering. They had turned down offers to carry another channel on the frequency as they have plans to expand their broadcast hours (eventually).
It is cool to see the figures but regardless the station isn’t looking like it wil be any different to the already loaded stations on the box already. All the shows are by now repeats and the TAGLINE (for the first time on Irish TV) is a mockery of the broadcast system. Just a cheap. Really cheap. They might get away with first time on an Irish run TV station but the first just seems like a cheap way of saying a repeat from a UK counterpart already on the same broadcast system.
The Majority of the shows on the channel are already on other stations as i stated above and the channel now looks like it is about to rehash the Movies already playing on a loop on TV3. In all the inital impact of the site is weak. They are probably right to not carry another channel on the spare broadcasting hours as it will take away from the identity of the station in a big way. I still to this day can’t understand why CHORUS broadcast two stations on the same channel… Like Nick and Paramount Comedy1… to my understanding they are a digtal service provider and that kind of system is dated (back to the day for the old black box). They advertise them seperatly on the flyers etc but they share one space.
C6 need to find something that makes them worth the channel change and a t present they offer nothing more than the tired SKYONE format (Startreck and buffy by day) and a buch of shows that are just repaeting everywhere else. Las Vegas, My name is earl, numb3rs already airing elsewhere on other channels and CSI, CSI Miami, Fraiser, Sex and the City, Dawsons Creek, Charmed, Raymond, Law and Order, That 70’s show (on bravo, trouble and paramount at the moment (do we need a fouth channel to watch it on), JAG all on repeat over the past four years on numerous channels at numerous almost daily times. They are offering very little in the way of diversity and to say that POPSCENE is anything other than filler would be a joke. Maybe it need time to develop or maybe i’m being harsh but it just seems like a lazy approch to an opening of a TV station. E4 have been toying with this idea but then again e4 is a brother channel with Channel 4 and can try these things without any real worries.
C6 have taken House which is a start, Dead like me (which was cancelled in the states but still on a bad show) and the Closer (nothing special). I do have to give them credit for at least going after House…. i could never understand why other channels shy’d away from an Emmy winning Hugh Lawrie vechical. no UK network even sniffed at it.
Hi again, I couldn’t disagree with a single word Lockie. Particularly that annoying tagline of “first time on Irish TV” that all channels use - “Network Premiere” is another irritant. On top of that there is the legit NEW programme Prison Break on Ch6 which I’ve just heard is also going to role out on RTE (1 or 2?) in June.
I didn’t know Dead Like Me was cancelled across the water - wasn’t my cuppa. Sky did something similar by running about six episodes of Threshold and then droppping it without a word to viewers.
As a viewer of the standard NTL cable channels, I do welcome Ch6. Reason being that I had to make a choice - broadband or digital. I’m trying to mind my pennies and only discovered this site when trying to find out if I could get something like freeview (in Dublin
without the monthly payments…. I’m still looking. But that’s off topic. Ta, Trip.
Poor ol’ Channel 6 have lost another exclusive… Numb3rs is going to be on ITV in July / August. Oh, well…
Hey Trip,
Prison Break is great, if you like 24 and oz (minus the whole prison love angle) then yeah brilliant…. the second part of the season in america is nearly over and they ‘is’ still turing out the a fine show. Funny that both networks are chasing it though.
As regard Threshold… it was watchable… kinda like dead like me or tru calling (they weren’t anything fabulos but worth a watch when they were on) but many netowks on our side of the water are jumping on to dead vechials because of the competion. I suppose they can’t all be winners but the likes of Threshold and even NightStalker (Bravo aired the 6/7 episodes that exist without any resolve in the story) are finding themselves on prime time here and with the airing schedules differnce between us and america they end up getting cancelled and then just faded out here. Remeber the new Tarzan SKY aired last year… gone without a trace (thank christ). This seems to happen on cable/digital now more offtne than on the likes of BBC or RTE. RTE and the likes tend to take more time in choosing a series, it is very rare for them to end up with any dead ducks.
But im off point here. As a bonus The Closer was taken up for second season so that is good news for channel 6. I know it must be hard for any network to try and find some original programming but i’m suprised at how much rerun crap (i use that in the rerun and not show quality sense) they have taken. At least TV3 went out and chased a little more…. the likes of Supernatural / Las Vegas (season 1) / arrested development (kudos to them on that by the way and BBC) / Crossing Jordan / Dragnet (not so good but who else has it) / Everyboy hates Chris (Kudos again) / The Shield (more kudos)… i know TV3 plays a lot more shite too and have more money but they really did get behind some good programming and stuff that wasn’t really on any other network. The c6 schedual is very rehased and i have show that, by pointing out how many times or stations the same programs are running on. Why not call it rerun TV if you missed the last 6 six seasons of buffy that were rerun on Sky both day and night 3 times a year then watch it again on C6…. just doesn’t cut the mustardc for me.
I do want to seen them do better… im all for diversity in viewing and why not a digital Irish station but i want to see some effort. Okay im harphing on about the same ol crap so i better stop typing. Sorry!
Trip…. Numb3rs season 2 is staring in July on ITV they have alredy finnished shoing the 13 episodes from season 1. It was never exlusive. Sorry
Ooops, my mistake Lockie, thanks for pointing that out. Was never aware of it.
Cheers
Trip
have some news for all on sky digital was talking to channel 6 manament team to day was told channel 6 2 be launched verry shortly i asked so next month they said more then likely there still in talks on a deal
I didn’t mean to sound rude TRIP my friend….
Darren, Are you serious?? It’s going to be on Sky???!!! Oh I can’t wait!! The excitment.
yep del thats what the manager told me verry shortly i was told no date just soon maybe in a month she says call them your slefe ull see
Ever hear of sarcasim Darren???????….!
are u someone i know del haha but messing aside it should be cool when it comes to sky
I dont see why Sky doesnt give Channel 6 no.105. No1 is using it and then Channel 6 would be beside the irish stations!
Regarding comment made by Dave on 31st March on how to get Channel 4/ 5, BBC 3/ 4 etc on SKY Digital in Ireland by purchasing a UK sky ftv card.
If I carry out installation as noted, will this overwrite the RTE/TV3 channels set up on sky system at channel 101 etc?
Mart
ruby,
Five is using 105 in the UK but not available in ireland. This could be the problem as Five may consider some time in the future to become available in Ireland and may be retaining this option with Sky.
Maybe it would be in channel 6’s interest to have themselves on a unassigned channel if they wanted to attract northern irish viewers on the UK sky system.
There would be no benefit to Channel 6 attempting to go into Northern Ireland because: Firstly, the penetration of the channel would be so small that it would cost more for the administration to run itself than advertising money could possibly take in. Secondly, programming rights were purchased for the Republic only (this second point is a guess but a logical one considering they were never available to air in NI from the off).
Lockie, nothing rude was taken from your last comment, cheers mate, whoever you are, Trip
I dont know about your guess at programming rights. The Wrestling Channel an Irish run operation is as far as I know available on UK digital as well. Most UK based channels are available here and Irish advertisers can buy cheap spots on them for when the ad breaks come on although we still see some uk ads in that mix.
The issue stopping Channel 6 is the fact they have yet to land a channel on SKY so with availability in the North it would be of benefit to 6 as they could claim their advertising has far greater penetration than RTE, TV3 or TG4. I cant see greater admin costs seeing as the stations output is all run from one unit in dublin without having to do what rte or bbc do and create a local offshoot broadcasting facility (cork and n.ireland respectively) and as their programme features no news there is no commitment from them to cater to regional interests.
Hi Paul
….”as their programme features no news there is no commitment from them to cater to regional interests” is the only bit that makes any sense.
The rest is just gobbledygook… the wrestling channel! Ha, ha, ha, brilliant! Of course it’s available in the UK. It’s available in Ireland but only as spillover and without any Irish advertising.
Most UK channels are not available to Irish Advertisers - only Sky1, Sky News, Sky Sports 1 & 2, UTV, Channel 4 (which Ireland only has limited access to), E4, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Comedy 1 and it is rumoured that LivingTV will be available to Irish advertisers by Septemebr end. I don’t think the above list would constitute “most UK based channels”.
RTE, TV3 and TG4 are available up north. It may be limited but they are available.
As for the RTE broadcast unit in Cork - truly hilarious. Its a hangover from the RTE Radio Cork days and is probably barely any more functional than a standard outside broadcast unit - that is, a van with a satelite on its roof.
You may eventually get Ch6 up north but there will be rights issues and you will probably have to buy some card from across the water to get it. The reason these cards have to be sent for from across the water is because the channels your looking for were never meant to be recieved - legally.
Cheers Paul, talk to you again
Trip
So anyway what’s the latest ?is channel 6 coming on Sky digital or what?. Does anyone out there have any information on this?
Watching chanel 6 at the moment with Dreambox On Sirius satelite. Its just the usual Tv3 Tabloid tv with lots of ads.Iam just changing chanels now!
Hi All
I just got myself a sony bravia tv with freeview built into it. I know many say that you cannot get freeview in the South but I’ve been told that you can in places/ So, my question is… how do I found out of it works or not? What do i need to do? Cheers, y’all have a good weekend.
I do hope CHANNEL SIX gets on Sky as free-to-air. For that matter, why doesn’t RTE copy BBC and ITV in demanding free-to-air access on the SKY offer and invoke European competition rules the moment SKY says no. Ireland needs a TV presence in Europe. I can’t think of any of the other pre-2004 EU members who are not represented on at least one European satellite platform with free-to-air access across Europe. The copyright argument is, I think, bogus. I live in France and can access general entertainment channels from Belgium, Holland and Germany on Astra 19° and it’s all free-to-air, as can anyone one living almost anywhere in western Europe. So, come on Ireland, claim your place in Europe’s TV landscape. Imagine, ‘Fair City’ could become an icon from Holyhead to Trieste!
Channel 6 is another version of RTÉ minus the Irish programmes. All it seems to be showing is more and more imported American shitcoms. Ones RTÉ has allready shown repeatedly..
I’d like to see more than Buffy the vampire slayer and Dawsons crack. One good thing going for it though is that they play some music videos at night. Good since MTV and VH1 gave up playing music videos a long time ago.
Where’s the best place to look for jobs in the Media. I’ve been checking RTE and TV3’s websites daily but Setanta, Channel 6 and TG4 don’t seem to advertise on their sites.
In the UK we have bradcast which I remember RTE using a few years back, but haven’t seen anything lately.
Anyone got any ideas??
Trip,
i think you missed the point and went off on a tangent
“… the wrestling channel! Ha, ha, ha, brilliant! Of course it’s available in the UK. It’s available in Ireland but only as spillover and without any Irish advertising.”
The wrestling channel is an Irish run venture produced in Dublin thats why it is available here and why i used it as an example. Price and target audience are the only thing limiting irish advertisers from going to air on any of the channels on the sky listings.
“RTE, TV3 and TG4 are available up north. It may be limited but they are available.
As for the RTE broadcast unit in Cork - truly hilarious. Its a hangover from the RTE Radio Cork days and is probably barely any more functional than a standard outside broadcast unit - that is, a van with a satelite on its roof.”
RTE TV3 and TG4 can only count ratings from fee paying households that are in the republic, being that they are terrestrial channels but it would seem more appropriate for Channel6 to engage audiences both side of the border and achieve that which others have failed to do and get the highest potential audience figures possible in this country. The reason i stated the case of the wrestling channel is not for their production values but that their situation shows the full potential of digital reaching beyond terrestrials capabilities and Channel 6 would do well to move fully into the north before rte consider it. RTE Cork i listed as an example of having regional responibilites, costly ones at that. A lot of documentaries and no disco (r.i.p) are put out under the rte cork banner. you may find it hard to believe but it is a working facility.
“The reason these cards have to be sent for from across the water is because the channels your looking for were never meant to be recieved - legally.”
i never raised this card issue and from a broadcasters perspective it means sweet f.a in the grand scheme of trying to get those much coveted ratings, which is what i am discussing.
Ha channel 6,
Yes its great for a hangover. My irk is the Dublin4 accents of the “few” presenters and especially the trailer voiceovers. It should be renamed Southside tv.
wheres the Hoeume produced programming”?
Also watching it on a dreambox in central europe.
Good luck to a fledgling channel, great to see Fraiser again,….
Reply To Marks Message 6th April:
Just wanna say a big thank you for your useful indtructions. My hubby loves watching F1 but because we have SKY he misses it. Used your instructions & it worked a treat. Why isnt this info generally available?? Is it something illegal??
Thanks again :0)
No, its not illegal. All ITV channels are now Free To Air - they just don’t appear on the Sky Guide because they haven’t paid Sky for a slot.
I think we will eventually see UTV join the Sky Guide - they were in discussions with Sky and were ready to announce a launch date but TV3 objected and are currently battling it out with ITV in the courts. The situation may change if UTV or ITV buy Canwest’s stake in TV3.
so what channel on ntl do i find channel 6 on….only just heard about it
on an entirely differnt subject, does anyone know how to get CHANNEL 5 on sky digitali have tried the frequecy which allows you to add the channel but when you select to view it comes up unavailable.
Assume you have an Irish subscription. Therefore Five is not available to Irish viewers - you need a UK subscription or Free To View card from http://www.freesatfromsky.co.uk (for the latter you need to have a UK address or get a friend/relative there to register).
Mark
If you install a UK Free to View Card on the Irish SKY Box
will it over-write the RTE/ TV3 Channels - as these are on channels 101,102 etc which are allocated for BBC,ITV etc in the UK?.
Martin
Yes, when you insert the UK FTV card channels 101-105 will show the UK terrestrial channels.
When the Irish card is inserted back in, the Irish terrestrials appear after a few seconds.
ye loosers should get out more. listen to ya moaning about the tv. “but like my mate said this, and i cant get it, and my life is sooooo much worse now”. get a life.
Mark (or anyone else) do you know if its possible to get channel itv4 on sky digital in ireland? Is there a frequency i could use???
Sue - No channel 4 on an Irish subscription but ITV’s1-4 are all available if you add them manually (using Services > System Setup > Add Channels). They don’t appear on the Sky Guide.
Have a look here for a good list of frequencies :-
http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html
The alternative is to pick up a second hand box off ebay or somewhere like that and buy a UK FTV (Free To View) card which will give you Channel 4, Five and Sky Three as well as listing all the UK channels on the Sky Guide.
Hi,
To get ITV stations go to add channels & enter the following;
freq;10.832
Polar; H
Mbal; 22
FEC 5/6
Above will give ITV 1
Freq;10.906
Polar; V
Mbal; 22
FEC;5/6
above will give you ITV 3
Freq;10.758
Polar; v
Mbaul; 22

Further to my last post re. Channel 6 not being available on the Chorus analogue service in Cork, I have just noticed that it has appeared on Channel 28 on the set-top box just 1 down from CNN/Discovery. I am not sure which channel it is replacing as it was previously scrambled but I think it may have been music channel, The Box.
Further news update: I see in today’s Sunday Tribune business sction a story about plans by the minor channels (channel6,Setanta and Sky Ireland), to set up a rival to Nielsen’s ratings system. In the article the Chief Executive of Channel 6 mentioned plans to set up a ‘plus one’ and a music channel.
Any News on Channel 6 being shown on SKy, im in north of ireland and on UK Sky! Need to see it i have a relative presenting a show and want to see it!!!!! help!!
i heard on a satellite forum that channel 6 is available with either a patchable satellite reciever or i think maybe on the dragon/t-rex cam.
if you want to research this join a satellite forum such as www.alsat.co.uk or www.gccadm.net, both these sites are a hive of information.
I would reccomend a technomate 1500ci reciever, they can be patched via a computer/laptop to open pay channels (for research purposes only)!!!
they are also only about £90- £110.
(you can also put in an nds patch so you can use your sky cards in the reciever as well)
all updates are available from the sites mentioned, best of luck.
can you get channel 4 by tuning in a frequency in ireland?
