Never Knowing when to shut up!
I noticed a thread on the IDGC board on boards.ie saying that `Sky by broadband’ had launched so obviously I checked it out! You just go to an area on the Sky website and register by just plugging in your viewing card number and some other details, then you download the desktop application and away you go.
Our subscription is only for the Sports Channels so I can’t tell you what the Movies aspect of this service is like but the Sports bit is brilliant. After you log in, you get presented with the below menu.
I’m a Rugby fan so I went to see what they had on offer in that regard and was pleasantly surprised with a quite excellent selection of the weekend’s rugby. Being a Munster fan I decided to download the highlights of this weekend’s match, having selected the match it goes into your download queue. And you wait for it to come down.
Then it’s just a matter of watching it!
So all in all it’s an excellent service, of course the video content is DRMed to hell but what can you do about that. I’m gonna keep adding screenshots to this Flickr set so be sure to check that out.
Now that’s interesting. I’ll have to root out out my viewing card number. I’d like it better if they offered the syndicated programming too.
Yes I have Sky+ but a few prime time downloads would be a fantastic boredom buster when you’re stuck in a hotel whose only English language channel is FOX News.
Hmmm, I can understand the whole crippling it to one PC thing but is there a way you can move your registration? Nothing in the FAQs about de-authorising the currently licensed system and then authorising one in it’s place.
Which is a bit annoying if your laptop drops off the belt and onto the floor after being through the Airport X-Ray.
Yeah I’ve seen people encounter that very problem Mark. It does seem incredible they haven’t thought of that problem, or thought of the fact that most people who’ll want to use the service will have two machines they’ll want to use this on.
A workaround might be as follows, you’re allowed add other users to your account so register a fake member of your family and use that username on your second machine?
That’s pretty bloody sweet.
Actually you can load it onto any machine simply by copying the relevant folder in ‘Program files’ or whichever directory you saved the Sky-broadband onto, then pasting the same folder onto a memory stick or a portable hardrive than by simply connecting your portable memory onto another PC you should then be able to execute the program using your login details.
Magnet.ie are planning to provide this service under the name ‘SkyByWire’ which is quite a clever brandname. I posted about Magent a few days ago here, if you’re interested in finding out more about them -> http://www.johnbutlerlive.com/2006/01/20/magnet-entertainment/
Did you know it installs a P2P file sharing application on your PC which runs in the background and uploads any films you have donloaded to other users? This isn’t obvious from the installation. The P2P app is called Kontiki and it IS NOT uninstalled if you uninstall Sky by Broadband so it carries on working. Nice eh?
Yep it’s mentioned in an update I did as soon as that information became apparent.
Ooh sorry, that wasn’t obvious from this page.
