Never Knowing when to shut up!
A year ago I got my current laptop and I’ve not got around to formating it yet so it’s accumulated quite a bit of crap over the past 12 months. Recently I’ve been getting low disk space warning for my C: partition and since I’m too lazy to re partition I needed to figure out where the hell the space had gone just incase there was anything I could get rid of.
So I found this great free app called JDiskReport. Tom will be happy because it works on `all’ platforms. So basically you get it to do a scan of the disk and it comes back with a nice pie chart of where the space is gone.
Basically I found 3GB that were wasted essentially. Firstly there was a 2 GB directory from when I installed Google Desktop Search. So I deleted that!
Another wasted directory was a log file from Peer Guardian which was 1 GB, so that was an easy 3 GB to clear without doing much.
It’s a great program whether you need to find out where your space has gone missing or just if you want to play with a new toy.
Welcome to the world of Storage Resource Management (SRM), congratulations you’ve just gone all Enterprise computing on us.
Oh sweet Jesus I’ve just spotted that it’s written in Java, and it’s like, not a client front end for some server based process but a natively hosted app.
Did it take 15 days to free up that 3GB?
Lol Mark! Ah but it’s not really something I’ll be using that often so I couldn’t care how slow it runs or what language it’s in!
nice tip Dave, thanks.
I recommend you to use Drive x-Ray next time it’s really cool and beautiful.
