Blogging And Advertising

Damien did a post today that prompted me to run through some thoughts I’ve been having about advertising and blogs. Damien in today’s post mentions RSS ads which are a particular peeve of mine these days. I toyed with the idea of them once upon a time but when I read this post by Matt it made a whole lotta sense to me.

You see I’ve never clicked on an RSS ad and what’s more I don’t think I’ve clicked on an Adsense ad on a site I read regularly. So with people on blogs I read regularly like Tom and Neil increasing there level of advertising I’d love to suggest a solution. What I’d do personally is to have a cookie on my site so that repeat visitors didn’t get ads.

People who click on my ads stumble into here from Google so it’d be great if they were the only people who got the Ads. I believe Russell used to do this and his Ad Revenue isn’t too bad at all!

I see your point Dave about not serving ads to regulars but my take on this would be that as they are regular consumers of your bandwidth, they have the greater responsibility to help pay for it!

That’s a fair point, but I just don’t think regulars click on my ads! It’s a good point though, are you going to put ads in your RSS?

Not just now Dave - mainly ‘cos I don’t technically have a way to do so! If I did, I might try it - I have over 100 people subscribed to my feeds so it would be an interesting experiment.

I’d be careful to keep it low key though - text only, and not too much of it!
