Never Knowing when to shut up!
OK so the Internet in work is supposed to be only for business purposes but all the same everyone uses it to look at the news etc. I can understand the blocking of Gambling, Porn and Chat sites, but if anyone can give me a reason for why the filter blocks House Of Bush I’d be well impressed.
I was reading this MeFi thread when I tried to click on the link to read the sources for the book “House Of Bush, House Of Saud”, I got a blocked message from the corporate firewall. Amazed I was! I assumed that there was some dubious content on the site, but all the same I tried the normal ways of getting around the firewall. Well actually I first checked why the site was blocked using the Test A Site feature. It categorised it as “Usenet News”, which is odd, cos I actually use Google Groups in conjuction with sci.electronic.design all the time. But anyway I digress. So I used the Internet Archive to try and look at the site, but that was blocked, but good old Google didn’t let me down. So using the Google Cache of the page I managed to take a look.
Now there is definitely nothing dubious about that page, well certainly nothing more dubious than Ann Coulter’s page, or Bill O’Reilly’s page, all of which I can access using my work PC. So the right wing bias strikes again!
“House of Bush” could be blocked because it’s a slang term for “pubic triangle.” Whoopie Goldberg played on this fact when she slated Bush at a Kerry fund-raiser. She lost her Slim-Fast contract on account of her comments.
Yeah, I know that but that’s not the reason you get when you check it on the site tester. Haven’t seen any similar blockage yet though.
