Map Of The Universe

Map Of The UniverseIt’s weird how the Internet works. In an interview, Matt Haughey mentioned that I had a PhotoBlog based on his Ten Years Of My Life project. So when I started getting referrers from the interview I obviously went to check it out, Matt mentioned that Nelson’s Weblog was one of his favourites so I ended up there and loved it too.

The thing that he had that I really loved and hadn’t seen elsewhere was this post on a Map of the Universe. The Map was made by Princeton University in the US and shows the Universe on a Logarithmic scale with the earth as the centre.

What’s really amazing is just how some things are. Like the Oort Cloud stretches for a whole decade on the log scale. This means that it is absolutely massive! The Oort Cloud for those not in the know is where all the comets that come past our Sun are born. It is full of dust, debris and Ice and is so large it stretches half way to the next star. Now of course a geek like me finds that facinating and can’t figure out how everyone doesn’t but hey, I’m happy and I don’t care!

Getting back to the Map, I can definitely see myself printing it out and sticking it on the wall….now that’s geeky.
