Never Knowing when to shut up!
Yet again there seems to be a lot of posts around the place about MT Comment SPAM, Mezzoblue has taken to closing older posts, some people are getting hammered and others are writing guides to combat the scourge of comment spam.
Now I’m very fortunate, I’ve had about 5 spams ever. I don’t deny that Weblog is a scourge to other people, but I just think that closing older comments is cutting off our collective noses to spite the spammers. I currently get comments on old posts that are quite useful. Check out this post on my PSU. There you can see useful feedback that I’d have no other way of recieving.
So I’m not going to take to closing older comments. If I get SPAM, I’ll deal with it then. I’m not going to change how I act because of those muppets.
I get anywhere between 2 and 15 spam comments a day, right now im just deleting them by hand, but i shall have to deal with it better than that.
My server is also being hit by referrals from porn sites on occassion, so i had to write a .htaccess file for my server to block IPs.
Its a pain
That’s horrible, are you planning on installing MT Blacklist or anything like that?
Kinda funny, I look at closing entries as a good thing all around, I find it very annoying when somebody comments on an entry I posted last year. Usually it’s because I either might never see it, or barely notice it from within the MT control panel. I like keeping discussions on the current side of things, but that’s just me
Im implementing black list at the mo…
err look at my server logs for last month, and see some of the dodgy referrers, they chewed up 800mb of bandwidth

Movable Type v2.66 implements indirect linking which means that spammers won’t get a Google Page Rank boost, which means it’s far less worthwhile for them to do it, but we’ll see if it happens!
I installed MT Blacklist myself and its a good help but its by no means perfect because you get some people that seem to spam one entry at a time.
As usual the pro-spammers have workarounds in place already and are making proper comments on entries but the url they leave is a spam domain. Its an endless battle.
I like the fact that people can comment on old blog entries from years back, but the way of seeing these new comments on old entries could be improved.
