England Win

I really, really had hoped that this, my 200th post would be about something that would make me happy…. but it certainly isn’t. This morning England won the Rugby World Cup in a hard fought match against Australia. Neither team could have begrudged the other had they won, but in the final minute or so, Johnny Wilkinson kicked another drop goal to clinch it. Of course as an ‘Anyone but England supporter’ I was gutted. Why? Because it’s now 2003 and we still hear on almost a daily basis how England won the football World Cup in 1966, and how clearly that was the greatest World Cup ever, and how nothing else compares. I really, really hope we’re not going to get 40 years of the same because of this. Yes England are good but from their media you’d swear that the world should be worshipping their players because of this. They were lucky to win the match. If they hadn’t won the match there would have been conspiracy theories as to how the Aussies robbed it from them. England when it comes to sport are sore-losers and bad winners. They don’t accept either senario gracefully. For example Diego Maradonna’s ‘Hand Of God’. I agree he cheated, but if you ever watch an English fan telling you about the match, he neglects to mention that putting that aside, Argentina still won quite comfortably and in the process Diego Maradonna scored another goal, one that is regarded as one of the greatest ever.

So England, well done you won, but please don’t blow it out of all proportion.
