Switch To Mozilla

I’m a Mozilla zealot. I use it all the time and haven’t looked back since I switched from Internet Explorer. I tell people all the time how great it is and how they should change to it and I’ve convinced two people to switch and they in turn have convinced people to switch. What I’m wondering and what others wonder is whether this is enough for Mozilla to really challenge Internet Explorer. The conclusion you have to come to is that it really isn’t. To beat Internet Explorer Mozilla needs Stability (already on a par with IE) and Better Features (has them in spades). So what’s wrong them why isn’t Mozilla the browser of choice of the majority of people. Because it’s a geek’s tool I hear you say. That can’t be the only reason. Look at Google, I remember when pretty much only the /. crowd used Google and now it’s what everyone uses all the time. But what’s the difference between Google and Mozilla, Google didn’t look like the geek tool. Mozilla does. Mozilla needs brand identification and it needs to not change all the time. 99% of users don’t want to change their browser version every month. I want to be able to tell my friends to go to Mozilla.org and download the browser and the mail client. I want the install program to replace and import all their IE/OE settings and then hopefully they’ll be so impressed they’ll tell their friends the same.

Mozilla doesn’t have a few hundred million dollars of marketing behind it.
It doesn’t come bundled with your ISP cd.
It doesn’t come with the worlds most popular operating system.

However I think Microsoft has given up on the browser wars now. They realise the Browser isn’t as dominant as it was going to be. Its just a bloody browser at the end of the day. Thats why they are not pouring new money into IE development and are only going to be releasing an MSN version of IE.

Maybe its because they won the war though or maybe they have just realised it was a waste of money since the OS is still king.

They seem to be concentrating more on IM now though as this is a booming tech area and they are becoming dominant in that too. IM is becoming the main communication tool right now.

I’m waiting for an MS Blogging and News Aggregator tool though. It might get added into Outlook in the near future.

I think Mozilla will start to take off though. They just need to simplify the installation of it and find a way of having it get to peoples desktops.

You’re right about MS and the IM market. When they closed their chatrooms in the UK ‘to protect’ kids they recommended everyone move to MSN Messenger which IMHO is as if not more dangerous for kids to be on unsupervised!

To be honest I never want to see a MS Aggregator, all that’ll happen then is that they’ll force a change in RSS standards or something like that.
