US Bias on Israel

OK I’m for War; Saddam is a brutal, harsh dictator. He should be removed, but unfortunately you can’t just go around removing regimes which you dislike but fortunately Saddam has screwed up, he is in violation of many Security Council resoultions, most recently UN Security Council Resolution 1441 which holds ’serious consequences’ for Iraqi non compliance. So that makes sense to me. If the inspectors decide that the inspections aren’t working then fair enough, the UN must prevail and if that means war, then war it is.

Makes sense right? You have to stay in line with UN resolutions. The US are the worlds policeman and they are telling us the UN will be irrelevant unless we keep Iraq in line with 1441. Small problem though -

Resolution 242
Affirms that the fulfilment of Charter principles requires the establishment of a just and lasting peace in the Middle East which should include the application of both the following principles:

Withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict;

Termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgement of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force;

Interesting isn’t it….

That resolution is from 1967, Israel are clearly in violation of it. That isn’t up for debate. You can argue with “Withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict;”. It hasn’t happened, end of story!

So that set me off digging deeper and look what I found a full list of all UN Security Council Resolutions on Israel since 1948. Interesting reading. The list seems endless. More disturbing than Israeli non-compliance with the UN are the numerous times the US has used it’s veto. Here are a couple of samples.

June 9, 89: Strongly deplored Israel’s violation of the human rights of the Palestinians. Vote: 14 to 1.

Aug 11, 89: Demanded Israel return property confiscated from Palestinians during a tax protest and allow a fact-finding mission to observe Israel’s crackdown on the Palestinian uprising. Vote: 14 to 1.

Mar 5, 90: Called for a fact-finding mission on abuses against Palestinians in Israeli occupied lands. Vote: 14 to 1.

Now am I missing something, none of those seem unreasonable to me at all. A fact finding mission = unreasonable, but when the French say that the time is not right for war yet they are charged with making the UN irrelevant! Please…we’re not stupid.

Nor do I believe the American people are stupid, unfortunately in general they are not presented with all the facts. I doubt half of them would even believe what I’m writing. They aren’t told of the full facts. They don’t know that they spend billions every year keep the brutal Israeli regime in power. They definitely don’t seem to see that they’re media post the 11th of September is afraid to speak out against anything. They don’t get both sides of the story.

So here is what the French, the Germans and even the British should do. No wait I’d imagine you’d get every Security Council member to support this resolution. A resolution could be tabled by every member of the UN. Ask the US to join if they wish; I doubt they will but anyway. Table a resolution setting a deadline for full Iraqi compliance with the UN, but in the same resolution, threaten Israel with first sanctions, then military action if she doesn’t comply with the UN resolutions asking for her immediate withdrawal from occupied territories. The US supported the resolution which allowed Gulf War I. It asked for Saddam to withdraw from occupied Kuwait. He didn’t he was attacked and forced to leave. The same rules should apply here.

If the US vetoes, well then they don’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to insulting the French.

You can disuss this article here. I’ll hopefully be submitting this to K5 later on too.

    I agree with Dave’s insightful commentary. I think that our blatant support for a war criminal like Ariel Sharon is a blackeye on the American public. America has lost all of it’s credibility because all of Geroge Bush’s decision’s regarding Israel are dictated by the Pro-Israeli Lobby. I hope the American public wakes up , and kicks out the puppet’s in the white house. Israel itself poses the biggest threat to its citizens, and their government knows this, but they want to perpetuate the occupation, and dehumanization of the Palestinians. In doing this they can provoke the militant factions, and cry out that they are victim’s of terrorism. Israel could bring peace to the region tomorow, but the Zionist right will never let this happen. Terrorism, and Racism are their rights of passage.

    Wow I had forgotten I’d even wrote this it’s been so long since I did. Cheers for the nice comments David, but I’m afraid things seem to be even worse now than when I wrote that first of all. I’m sure eventually the reasonable people on both sides will come to their senses.

    There is no justice in this world. Successive American Govt’s continue to blunder and destroy whatever chances of peace are there. Bush is the worst. Its their actions which give America a bad name and terrorism gets a further boost. Terrorists instead of being isolated get more and more volunteers which is really sad for world peace. It would seem the common American people can’t do anything about this
